Maitai Residence

Perched high above Nelson with sweeping views across the harbour and out to sea, the Maitai Residence offered incredible outlooks, but an outdoor environment that was difficult to use. Steep banks, uneven steps, and limited access meant much of the property remained disconnected from the home and its spectacular setting.

Kūmānu’s Landscape Architecture team worked closely with the homeowners to transform the site into a private hillside retreat, carefully terracing the landscape while preserving the sense of elevation and openness. Floating steps now guide movement through the garden, complemented by warm, understated lighting that brings the space to life at night.

A network of gravel paths provides secondary access to the lower courtyard, where a bocce court and firepit are anchored by natural boulder retaining. These elements ground the design in the rugged character of the site while adding moments of play and gathering.

Our Landscape Construction, Planting, and Irrigation teams delivered the build to an exceptional standard, completing the vision with lush, layered planting that softens the slopes and creates a peaceful, resort-like atmosphere.
