Decks Reserve Play Space represents a major step forward for inclusive, nature-based, and culturally grounded play in Motueka. What began as a simple request to install an accessible carousel evolved through collaboration between Kūmānu Landscape Architecture, Tasman District Council, iwi partners, and community stakeholders into a fully reimagined destination play space for all ages and abilities.
Drawing from the “Mountains to the Sea – Maunga ki te Moana” narrative, the design celebrates Motueka’s landscapes, waterways, and cultural identity. Theming developed with iwi partners grounds the space in Te Tauihu stories including play elements which have been named in collaboration with iwi, strengthening cultural connection and learning.
