Maitai Golf Course Bridge & River Works

Following the devastating August 2022 floods, the Maitai River corridor and Waahi Taakaro Golf Course required urgent intervention. Footbridges were destroyed, access routes were lost, and the fragile river environment demanded careful management. Kūmānu played a key role in the fast-paced recovery project, working alongside WSP and council partners to deliver landscape architecture, assessment, methodology development, and environmental management.

The project involved one of the most technically challenging aspects of river construction: a two-stage diversion of a live waterway while maintaining golf course operations. Our Project Manager, drawing on deep freshwater experience and scientific expertise, led the development of a methodology that protected ecological values, cultural considerations, and public safety.

Fish relocation, sediment control, rock selection, ecological inspections, iwi monitoring, and detailed quality assurance all ensured that the works met stringent consent conditions. The Landscape Architecture team supported rock sizing and placement to ensure the new structures blended naturally into the landscape.

Despite complex logistics, weather risk, and the need to coordinate across multiple contractors, the project delivered a resilient and environmentally integrated bridge connection that enhances safety, access, and river health for the long term.
