Punangairi Visitor Centre

Located at Punakaiki, Punangairi is the new gateway to Paparoa National Park and the iconic Pancake Rocks experience. Kūmānu was engaged by Naylor Love to deliver the landscape construction for this nationally significant site, where craftsmanship, cultural expression, and the raw beauty of the West Coast come together.

The project demanded exceptional planning and adaptability. Remote access, limited availability of local materials, and extreme weather conditions meant construction methods had to be carefully staged and tightly coordinated with DOC, local businesses, and multiple contractors operating within a live visitor environment. Minimising truck movements and supporting local suppliers were central values woven into project delivery.

The result is a landscape that enriches the visitor journey - lush nikau groves, exposed aggregate concrete, and striking timber barrier forms echo the rugged ecology of Paparoa. Intricate cultural detailing, including raki paving set at a precise 52 degrees, honours the stories of Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Waewae.

Durable, refined, and deeply connected to its place, Punangairi now stands as a benchmark for landscape construction in challenging environments, creating a memorable welcome to one of Aotearoa’s most treasured natural destinations.
